THE CHARMED SPHERE by Catherine Asaro – Nebula Award Winning Author
You might know Catherine Asaro for the Saga of the Skolian Empire (see my review of Primary Inversion). This passionate saga showed the lives of an Imperial Family.
Catherine Asaro decided to tackle her first fantasy novel through the lives of mages Chime, Jarid, Iris and Muller.
In a world where magic is not uncommon, Chime & Iris are both chosen to be the future of the mage kingdom. Chime is betrothed to Prince Muller who is about to become king. However, when news of his long lost cousin Jarid surfaces, Muller steps down and let the real heir take the crown even though he is blind, mute and deaf. Jarid is betrothed to Iris, the most powerful of the girls and her love for Jarid is powerful enough to make him recover his senses and assume his throne.
Through all those ordeals, they must defend their kingdom against an evil neighbor who’s help in a dark mage might engulf them all.
This is not Lord of the Rings obviously but I did enjoy this simple tale of magic, kingdoms and love. Catherine Asaro, as usual, creates compelling characters and brings us into her universe with her unique ability to warm the reader to her story.
I thoroughly recommend The Charmed Sphere to any fan of fantasy and romance combined.
